The books listed here are books I highly recommend for everyone's library. In my practice and personal life they have proven to be extremely helpful. I've made notes below where applicable.


Another great resource for informative reading material is Woodbine House. They offer outstanding family centered books on all areas of different abilities in children.

Excellent charts on development throughout each month of life. For the beginning therapist.


 Fine Motor Skills in Children With Down Syndrome : A Guide for Parents and Professionals

By Maryanne Bruni, BS/OT & Mary Ann Smothers Bruni. 1998. 


Nice text with clear progression of hand skills - great to share with parents and use for all children as a guide in therapy. There is an entire Woodbine House series of books to encourage dev. in children with D.S. and I highly recommend them to all parents and therapists.

Excellent text for parents and teachers covering preschool children and understanding sensory modulation dysfunction.


Sensory Secrets: How to Jump-Start Learning in Children

By Catherine Schneider. 2001. Paperback. 


Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight: What to Do If You Are Sensory Defensive in an Overstimulating World

By Sharon Heller. 2003. 


The author, a developmental psychologist, knows first hand how difficult life can be for people suffering from sensory defensiveness (SD). Written for adults with DSI. The book includes four sections - the first two focus on an overview of the condition, and the second two examine treatment, including diet, medication and relaxation techniques.

Emotional Development of Children


The Child With Special Needs : Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth

A must read for all therapists to learn more about the "Floor Time Approach" and following a child's lead, with case studies and therapy ideas listed.
